According to a popular belief, the number “13” brings bad luck. And, judging by the personal problems that have hit Barça right in the heart during this season – where one of its players and his first coach had to fight back cancer one more time – one could have thought the old sayings were right. Add to that the way the team was eliminated by Bayern on Champions League, and some of us already thought the glorious era of Barcelona was over. Well, my lovely ladies and gentlemen, you were wrong. It wasn’t. It isn’t. The hunger for winning is there. The union, the human quality that holds this club together is there, with or without Pep Guardiola. His legacy to the sport goes well beyond his physical presence, but one must not forget all the others. The silent workers, like Busi. The magic touches of Iniesta. The precise directions of Xavi, taking the so familiar role of conductor of this blaugrana orchestra. The ones who save the day, like Valdes. The ones who always have a smile and a kind word to everyone, like Pinto. The ones who step forward and take the responsibility, like Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira. The ones who are simply the meaning of football, like Messi. And a final – but the most important of all – the warriors, like Abidal, who was punched hard in the jaw by life but managed to punch back with his full force.
Last but not the least, let us have a kind word of appreciation for the quiet man on the sidelines. He knows what it is like to have your life threatened, he knows that at the end of the day this is just football. Eleven men running after a ball. For someone who beat cancer, this is nothing but a child’s play. If you think rationally, he is right. However, if you forget reason for one moment and try to see beneath the cold, dignified pose of that man – who many thought insignificant – you know he has reasons to be the happiest of all.
Va per tu, mister. Gràcies, equip. This is our league.
